[00:00:03.980] - Aaron Calafato

Tell me when you want me to officially start the seven minutes, because this is the last seven minutes of the year, I'm letting you control this episode because why? I'm...Unless I'm telling a story, what's wrong with me?

[00:00:13.850] - Cori Birce

You go on for a very long time, which I love about you in normal circumstances. But this is supposed to be a seven minute podcast.

[00:00:19.430] - Aaron Calafato

I just wanted to say thank you. And we've done three takes and it's been a disaster. So I am actually transferring, right now, officially control of this episode..

[00:00:27.500] - Cori Birce

He's just moved a crown from his head to my head.

[00:00:29.060] - Aaron Calafato

This isn't a story. This is sort of a wrap up of the year, we are doing year summary. I'm done.

[00:00:32.810] - Cori Birce

So, we just wanted to say thank you to everyone for listening. We've had a tremendous amount of growth this year. It's been incredible, even though this year has not been that incredible. We also wanted to let you know that we're taking a break. Aaron is going to go on vacation, which means he's not actually going to go on vacation. He's just not going to release any episodes until January. Twenty..., January 28th will be the next new episode. This would be a great time for you guys to binge and listen to the ones that you haven't heard yet or re-listen to your favorites, maybe share some on social media, you know have to throw that out there. What else am I supposed to tell them?

[00:01:09.650] - Aaron Calafato

I think that's it, that we're taking a three week break.

[00:01:11.630] - Cori Birce

Oh, yeah. Happy New Year.

[00:01:12.740] - Aaron Calafato

Happy New Year. Happy 2021.

[00:01:14.480] - Cori Birce

Happy birthday to our oldest kid, Lennon, which was yesterday.

[00:01:17.600]

Yeah. Happy birthday, Lennon. We're in the future right now.

[00:01:20.240] - Cori Birce

We are. (can't translate)........ What is it now? It's not even Christmas yet. We're recording this,

[00:01:25.820] - Cori Birce

No, but this will come out on the thirty...

[00:01:27.950] - Aaron Calafato

First!

[00:01:28.190] - Cori Birce

Oh that's New Year's Eve.

[00:01:29.210] - Aaron Calafato

That's what I'm saying. It's a New Year's Eve episode. That's why...

[00:01:31.710] - Cori Birce

We better get ready. We're having a party. Not a real party, because we're in a pandemic. We're having a party with our three children. It's us and the kids.

[00:01:38.600] - Aaron Calafato

It's us and the kids. We're not going anywhere. Obviously, we haven't gone anywhere for a year. So...

[00:01:42.560] - Cori Birce

Not been in a restaurant...

[00:01:43.580] - Aaron Calafato

OK, so I'm not taking over. But she said everything I wanted to say, which is thank you so much. The podcast has been growing like crazy. We're so thankful for that. Which is amazing. Let's keep it going.

[00:01:54.380] - Cori Birce

And now you sprung on me that you're going to ask me questions.

[00:01:57.320] - Aaron Calafato

I am going to ask you questions. So, look, so I'm looking at the timer here and it's two minutes, OK? So we have five minutes left of doing this.

[00:02:05.780] - Cori Birce

I have no concept of time? You know who I am, right?

[00:02:09.170] - Aaron Calafato

The whole reason why you took control of this episode, even though it's not a story, is because I couldn't control...

[00:02:13.730] - Cori Birce

I know how to speed you up because you get excitable and then you get very detailed things about a lot of things that people don't really need to about.

[00:02:18.650] - Aaron Calafato

So here's what I wanted to do just for fun, because we're not I'm not my recording closet. We're sitting at the table having coffee. Right.

[00:02:24.260] - Cori Birce

Our dining room table.

[00:02:25.070] - Aaron Calafato

It sounds like we're in a musical hall, but we just wanted to have some fun and talk about, actually, I wanted to talk to Cori because you're so used to hearing me every week telling a story. And there are some stories where you hear about Cori and I mentioned her. She's part of the tapestry of my storytelling because you're... Oh, by the way, I wanted to thank you. I love you so much. You make this whole thing go. And I really, no seriously, I really appreciate you. You're like.. You're my person.

[00:02:52.370] - Cori Birce

You're my person. And I love you, too.

[00:02:54.110] - Aaron Calafato

I love you. OK, so we're grateful for you. Don't look at the questions.

[00:02:58.140] - Cori Birce

I'm very nervous.

[00:02:59.090] - Aaron Calafato

These are these are softballs. OK, so I have some questions for Cori.

[00:03:05.960] - Cori Birce

Question number one, how dare you know?

[00:03:08.420] - Aaron Calafato

(Laughing) Here's here's a question...Well, you'll see, I didn't.... Have I told you any of these questions?

[00:03:12.440] - Cori Birce

I have no idea what's about to happen.

[00:03:13.940] - Aaron Calafato

And these aren't crazy questions but she's been very nervous about the questions.

[00:03:16.760] - Cori Birce

I'm so nervous that my palms are sweating.

[00:03:18.140] - Aaron Calafato

So we're running low on time here. So, here's what we got. First question, what was your favorite seven minute story this year?

[00:03:25.340] - Cori Birce

This year?

[00:03:26.120] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah got t to talk into the mic.

[00:03:27.680] - Cori Birce

Taco Bell for sure. One hundred percent.

[00:03:30.740] - Aaron Calafato

Taco Bell: An American Portrait.

[00:03:33.350] - Cori Birce

I love the Taco Bell episode.

[00:03:35.480] - Aaron Calafato

That was your favorite one.

[00:03:36.350] - Cori Birce

Yeah. See, I love them not just for the episode itself, but for the reaction that we get from people because we had so many people that we know call and text us and say like pictures of them eating tacos

[00:03:47.870] - Aaron Calafato

In the drive through.

[00:03:48.860] - Cori Birce

Like you inspired me to go to Taco Bell. And just that whole thing I thought was so cool. And just I love the way you describe things. Also, I got to watch you literally fumble with a taco in the recording closet for whas was much longer than needed to be. So, I think for me, the behind the scenes parts are what like why I love them the most, if that makes sense.

[00:04:11.300] - Aaron Calafato

It does.

[00:04:12.440] - Cori Birce

I went on too long.

[00:04:13.070] - Aaron Calafato

No, you're doing great. I just need you to lean in closer to the mic so they can hear you better. OK, so second...great, great answer. Second question. Oh God, we're running low on time, we have three and a half minutes left...

[00:04:22.160] - Cori Birce

Don't tell me the time!

[00:04:23.030] - Aaron Calafato

Sorry! What do you love about, What do you love about making this podcast?Being part of it, like, what do you love about it?

[00:04:30.360] - Cori Birce

Everything. I love watching you work. I've always loved your work, even when we were friends. You're incredibly talented. And I also love like Ken and Pete. Ken is one of our closest friends. I love getting to work with him and the things that he does. And Pete is..

[00:04:48.660] - Aaron Calafato

amazing artist

[00:04:49.390] - Cori Birce

so talented it's crazy.

[00:04:51.150] - Aaron Calafato

Anthony's helped out a lot with ideas.

[00:04:53.250] - Cori Birce

Yeah Anthony. I love hearing about your conversations with Anthony and like the way that you guys kind of come up with concepts together. I...

[00:05:01.680] - Aaron Calafato

This whole thing is designed for you to compliment me (laughing)

[00:05:04.020] - Cori Birce

It really is, I'm kind of panicking! I don't even remember what the question was.

[00:05:05.830] - Aaron Calafato

No, no, no, no. You just said it. What do you love about this podcast? You just told me.

[00:05:09.930] - Cori Birce

And I just love that it's a different way for me to hear you. So I get you to myself most of the time. But then it's really interesting and kind of exciting for me to hear the way that you tell stories to other people. I love watching you work and watching your brain work.

[00:05:27.210] - Aaron Calafato

What do you hate about making this podcast?

[00:05:29.430] - Cori Birce

It's a little time consuming sometimes, but not really. I don't really, I never really complain about you working or anything like that. I've always had your back.

[00:05:39.600] - Aaron Calafato

What is something the audience would never know about you?

[00:05:43.920] - Cori Birce

About me?

[00:05:44.490] - Aaron Calafato

That I haven't told them yet, which I'm very respectful, but like about your privacy.

[00:05:48.450] - Cori Birce

Literally the only thing that I can think of right now is that I am 100 percent obsessed with SNL. And the reason that I'm thinking of that is because I watched the Christmas special this week and they showed the clip. I don't even know if you're going to be talking about with an Anna Gasteyer and someone else and they're with Alec Baldwin and they're like doing the NPR skit where they're like "hello? And they do this like thing."

[00:06:12.430] - Aaron Calafato

Oh, yeah, I love that one.

[00:06:13.740] - Cori Birce

And they talk about shweaty balls.

[00:06:16.080] - Aaron Calafato

Shweaty balls.

[00:06:16.620] - Cori Birce

And it's so funny. So when we sat down to start recording this, I thought of that.

[00:06:19.950] - Aaron Calafato

Two more questions. We got about a minute and a half. I'll give you even 1:45. What's been the hardest thing? About 2020.

[00:06:30.280] - Cori Birce

Why are you doing this to me?

[00:06:31.990] - Aaron Calafato

I'm sorry..

[00:06:35.260] - Cori Birce

Lots of stuff. I'm crying..

[00:06:39.970] - Aaron Calafato

It's OK. I love you. Can you pick one painful thing?

[00:06:45.680] - Cori Birce

I can't talk.

[00:06:46.580] - Cori Birce

I think Christmas, like not going to see my family.

[00:06:49.730] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah, it's been hard.

[00:06:51.470] - Cori Birce

I mean. We saw my parents briefly, but like my grandma in Cincinnati, who I know is going to listen to this. It's just hard not not going to Cincinnati to see my family.

[00:07:02.230] - Aaron Calafato

We love our family. Like super close. It's really painful. So here's to 2021 right?

[00:07:07.150] - Cori Birce

Yes.

[00:07:07.780] - Aaron Calafato

OK, so...

[00:07:08.990] - Cori Birce

Thanks for that air.

[00:07:09.920] - Aaron Calafato

I love you. No, thank you for being honest about it. I didn't know it, listen, I hate to see you cry. I'm sorry. On a brighter note, we have about a minute left. What is your New Year's Resolution?

[00:07:24.130] - Cori Birce

To go outside! No, I'm just kidding. To hopefully get back to some normalcy and work on the stuff I've been working on. Like artitchiness and furniture. And hang out with you and the kids and watch everyone grow.

[00:07:43.900] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah.

[00:07:46.220] - Cori Birce

What about, what's yours?

[00:07:47.780] - Aaron Calafato

To get back to some normalcy, that's all, just to get back to some normalcy. My would to go to a restaurant and have a cup of coffee (laughing). Just to have a cup of coffee.

[00:07:57.020] - Cori Birce

To go inside somewhere and not feel panicked.

[00:07:59.780] - Aaron Calafato

Hey, we're a little over seven minutes, but guess what? I think we can count the first minute as like an intro. So, I say let's just let's let's wrap it... Let's, you know what, let's break the damn rules. It's my podcast. I can do whatever I want.

[00:08:11.600] - Cori Birce

That's right. That's how this all started.

[00:08:12.080] - Aaron Calafato

So this is a seven minute story. But guess what? I don't know what it is... anyways. Yeah, that at would be mine to just to get back to some sort of normalcy. But I do know is as you mentioned, this is time consuming, but it's a passion. You know, it's like my life as far as storytelling and my vehicle.

[00:08:28.040] - Cori Birce

I wouldn't have it any other way.

[00:08:29.420] - Aaron Calafato

It's brought normalcy to our life. I mean, in this state of, total not normalcy like it's a pattern and it's a thing that we do and it's a connection we have with people that is really meaningful. And to have you part of it is awesome. So this was a deeply emotional episode, which I'm okay with.

[00:08:45.350] - Cori Birce

I can't believe that you did this to me.

[00:08:47.150] - Aaron Calafato

I'm sorry. I love you. I didn't mean it. I didn't know you were going cry.

[00:08:49.340] - Cori Birce

I didn't mean it like that. Yeah, I just I've been feeling a little emotional. So, it's Christmas. You know.

[00:08:53.570] - Aaron Calafato

It's real. I love you so much and I appreciate it.... And I....

[00:08:56.600] - Cori Birce

Oh, wait, I have one question for you.

[00:08:58.460] - Aaron Calafato

Oh, God. Let's just keep going.

[00:08:59.900] - Cori Birce

Oh, well, this is after Christmas is going to come out, I was going to say what's your one essential Christmas watching movie?

[00:09:08.090] - Aaron Calafato

Oh, "It's a Wonderful Life."

[00:09:09.660] - Cori Birce

Mine's "Bishop's Wife." If you haven't seen Bishop's Wife, Cary Grant, I highly suggest you watch it.

[00:09:13.640] - Aaron Calafato

Two of the best Christmas movies ever and you'll do what we're doing right now, which is just crying.

[00:09:18.500] - Cori Birce

Yep. Christmas Bishop's wife is not so much.

[00:09:21.320] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah, it's very, very emotional, though, I thought it was emotional. Well, this was cool. We totally broke form, which is great. We've gone past seven minutes, which is like, who care?

[00:09:30.680] - Cori Birce

You never can do an episode with me in it that we don't.

[00:09:33.890] - Aaron Calafato

I know.

[00:09:34.370] - Cori Birce

I just ruined everything,

[00:09:35.390] - Aaron Calafato

you don't, what are you talking about?

[00:09:37.250] - Cori Birce

as far as time timing goes.

[00:09:38.990] - Aaron Calafato

I know. And what was funny was the criticism was that I would be the one that

[00:09:42.020] - Cori Birce

Well, you go on and on and then I just get you going.

[00:09:44.870] - Aaron Calafato

Well, it's our time though. Yeah. We have a clock that says...

[00:09:49.460] - Cori Birce

My brother and sister in law just dropped off Christmas presents and I can't wait and so I opened it.

[00:09:54.620] - Aaron Calafato

And it says Cori and Aaron on our time. So, on this episode we were definitely on our time. So happy 2020. Or Good riddance to 2020.

[00:10:04.070] - Cori Birce

Later.

[00:10:04.700] - Aaron Calafato

See you later. You sucked

[00:10:07.580] - Cori Birce

2020 can suck an egg.

[00:10:08.240] - Aaron Calafato

You sucked real bad.

[00:10:09.430] - Cori Birce

Remember when people said that?

[00:10:10.260] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah, suck an egg! You sucked to really bad 2020. You've made terrible terrible things happen. But I am hopeful for 2021 because we know that there's hope on the horizon.

[00:10:18.950] - Cori Birce

Can I before we leave can I do like an official NPR signing out.

[00:10:23.690] - Aaron Calafato

Yeah sure. Do it.

[00:10:26.270] - Cori Birce

I'm not actually going to say NPR. I'm just going to say. This is Cori and Aaron signing out. Goodbye. (silence) (laughs)

[00:10:41.000] - Aaron Calafato

I'm having a hard time because I always want the last word.

[00:10:44.849] - Cori Birce

Do it! (laughs)

[00:10:45.710] - Aaron Calafato

So, I couldn't stop it because I wanted to say "bye everybody!" But I'm actually going to let you do this again. This episode is going to get the last word.

[00:10:56.120] - Cori Birce

The only reason that I started doing the intros is because I would do this fake NPR voice for you.

[00:11:00.770] - Aaron Calafato

It's a great NPR voice. So ready? Go ahead, do it.

[00:11:03.980] - Cori Birce

I don't know what to say now.

[00:11:05.660] - Aaron Calafato

Sign-off. I just want everybody to know, this is hard for me. I'm not going to have the last word. Happy New Year. Love you guys. Go ahead.

[00:11:12.730] - Cori Birce
